The world of Mo

Molybdenum (Mo, atomic number 42) is unknown to many people, but plays a crucial role in our daily lives. It contributes to stronger materials, more sustainable energy solutions and innovative technologies. A small element with an important role to play in the societal challenges of tomorrow.

Mo strengthens

Mo makes steels and other metals corrosion-resistant, stronger, harder and more resistant to high temperatures. Mo allows us to make cars and airplanes lighter and thanks to Mo we need less material and energy to build bridges, buildings and pipelines. Mo is a sustainable element.

Mo gives energy

Mo can be found in thin-film photovoltaic modules and allows us to build the latest generation of offshore wind turbines. It is also essential for the construction of modern (and thus more economical) power stations.

Mo purifies

Mo plays a crucial role in the refining of more eco-friendly fuel and the desulphurisation of diesel.

Mo is everywhere

You will also find Mo in unexpected places. In piercing jewellery, pigments, fire retardants, medication and all kinds of electronics, ranging from transformers to the touchscreen of your smartphone. Mo is part of our day-to-day life and contributes to a more sustainable society. More information about the world of Mo is available here.

From raw material to end product

Molybdenum does not occur in its pure form in nature, but is usually bound to other elements such as sulphur, iron and copper. At Molymet Belgium, we process molybdenum sulphide ores – a by-product of copper mining – into high-quality molybdenum products that are used worldwide in a wide range of industries.

Roasted Molybdenum Concentrate (RMC)

Roasted Molybdenum Concentrate (RMC) is a product available in powder form or as briquettes, containing at least 57 per cent molybdenum, a maximum of 0.5 per cent copper and even lower concentrations of sulphur, carbon and other elements. RMC is produced in our roasting furnace: a sixteen-storey tower in which the ore is heated to a temperature of 600°C and, step by step, storey by storey, is converted into RMC. In addition, we produce sulphuric acid as a valuable by-product of this process, an important raw material in the chemical industry.

Ferromolybdenum (FeMo)

FerroMolybdenum (FeMo) is an alloy of molybdenum and metal containing at least 65 per cent Mo and low concentrations of silicon and copper. FeMo is produced by causing RMC to react chemically with silicon at a high temperature. This takes place under carefully controlled conditions and in specially prepared pits. The production of FeMo also yields a number of useful by-products, such as granules for the concrete and asphalt industries. Furthermore, the use of other by-products in this process makes it a textbook example of the circular economy.
